Racing Cars EV Cup

EV Cup, electric racing series, electric race cars, EV Cup delayed, Sylvian Fillippi, zero emissions racing, green automotive design, green transportation, alternative transportation
Looks like there’s some trouble in electric racing utopia. The EV Cup, the first zero-emissions racing series in the world, has cancelled its inaugural 2011 season due to delays with preparing electric cars for racing. Managing director of EV Cup Sylvian Fillippi had this to say about the delay: “The requirements for safety aspects and the delivery schedule for race cars was not going to allow sufficient time for testing.” So now what?

Well, one further delay seems to have effectively cancelled the entire 2011 season, so it would appear the EV Cup will begin sometime in 2012–hopefully: “Due to delays in the final production of our electric cars that were to be used in our race series, it is with great regret that we are left with no choice but to abandon plans for the 2011 EV Cup race series. We had races planned at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca on November 26 and Auto Club Speedway, Los Angeles on December 17,” staffers posted on the EV Cup’s Facebook page. We do hope the EV Cup is able to pull its vehicles together soon, as an all-electric and zero-emissions racing series could mean huge advancements in electric vehicle technology that trickle down to the consumer market in just a few years.

Honda Crossroad

Honda Motor Co., Ltd. announced the release of the new Crossroad, an automobile which transcends existing categories by combining the design and functionality of an SUV with the convenient size of a compact car and the 3-row seating and 7-passenger capacity of a minivan. The new Crossroad will go on sale throughout Japan on Friday, February 23.

The Crossroad was designed as an "active life navigator"-a car that helps people enjoy their active new lifestyles, unbound by conventional thinking.

The square motif of the exterior design conveys a feeling of solid presence and strength, while areas around the center pillars and windows are deeply beveled to achieve a sturdy, robust look.

The interior design features sculpted molding around the instrument panel to achieve a fun, confident feel. The square motif is continued throughout the interior, creating a refined, urban tone.

With its innovative packaging, the Crossroad offers a confident presence and versatile 3-row seating, yet is a breeze to handle around town thanks to an overall length of just 4,285mm. And the distinctive angular design around the front headlights gives the Crossroad an effective minimum turning radius1 at the top of its class2.

The Crossroad comes equipped with either a 1.8-liter or a 2.0-liter i-VTEC engine that combines responsive low-to-mid-speed driving performance with outstanding fuel economy. The engine is paired with a 5-speed automatic transmission to deliver nimble performance. The 4-wheel-drive model is also equipped with Hill-Start Assist function, which temporarily maintains brake pressure after the brake pedal is released when starting on a hill to ensure smoother starts and enhanced ease of use.

Packaging

The refreshing, smart packaging creates a versatile space inside a convenient body size.

Versatile 3-row seating offers plenty of convenience yet the overall length of 4,285mm makes it a breeze to handle around town.

The Crossroad's effective minimum turning radius of 5.6 meters3 puts it at the top of its class4.

The rear doors feature a wide opening angle of around 80ï, making it easier for passengers in the second- and third-row seats to get in and out.

The seating can be set in a variety of arrangements with easy operation. The second-row seats tilt and slide forward with the pull of a lever located on the shoulder of the second-row seatback, making it easier for passengers in the third-row seats to get in and out.

The Crossroad is equipped with an emergency puncture repair kit, replacing the spare tire and securing more space for third-row passengers while helping to make the vehicle lighter.

Advanced features and safety performance

The IHCC (Intelligent Highway Cruise Control)8 vehicle speed and distance control system helps reduce the burden on the driver during freeway driving.

The Collision Mitigation Brake System (CMBS)8 provides audio and visual warnings and braking to alert the driver and to help avoid a rear-end collision or mitigate damage and injuries in the event that one should occur.

Honda's Advanced Compatibility Engineering Body enhances passenger protection while mitigating impact on the other vehicle.

The vehicle is also designed to mitigate pedestrian injury in the event of a collision.

The rear frame features a large cross-section along with two internal impact-absorbing frames. The frames have a polygonal cross-section to enable them to effectively absorb the shock of a rear-end collision.

chevrolet orlando

Chevrolet Orlando is a car that is produced from the State of South Korea. Although including a new car, but this car has a special characteristic with the old Chevrolet car. Only for this car is a car Chevrolet Orlando from the incorporation of an SUV with a station wagon. This car has a shape that looks sporty appearance and is very strong. Chevrolet just unveiled the Orlando at the Paris Motor Show last week, and it is one of the cars debuted that looks like it could have a future here in Thailand. The Orlando is a 7-seat people mover, crossover, SUV, small 4-wheel drive with no aspirations for off-roading type car. It's actually very similar both in form and function to the Honda Crossroad.
Small Image

Honda don't sell the Crossroad in Thailand because it would compete somewhat with the CR-V. Honda also had a poor run of it with the 7-seat Stream, that eventually bowed out of the Thai market when the Wish clobbered it in what was already quite a small segment of the market.

Back to Chevrolet, and the Orlando, the situation is a little bit different. Chevrolet are enjoying a relatively successful run of it in Thailand.

The Chevrolet brand has a very good image in Thailand, where many Thais I've spoken to seem to believe that American cars are stronger than their Asian counterparts. Whether this reputation is founded or not is another issue, especially considering that the Aveo, Optra and Captiva all have Korean origins, and the Colorado is little more than a re-boxed and badged Isuzu D-Max.

But Chevrolet is doing okay in Thailand. Based on sales volume they are ahead of long-established rivals including Mazda, Mitsubishi and Nissan.

So for Chevrolet Thailand, there might be a bullish feeling that adding a new model to the line might be worth a try. Although the Orlando could possibly step on the toes of the Captiva somewhat, it also has the potential of outshining the Captiva altogether.

Should Chevrolet choose to replace the Optra with the Cruze next year, then the Orlando is even more possible since it is based on the same platform as the Cruze.

Additionally, it is possible that Chevrolet may wish to use Thailand as the production hub for the vehicle, and export to other Asian markets. However, they also have Korea as an option for this, as it has already been confirmed that the Cruze will be produced there.
Engines

Assuming that it is produced here, it is likely that the engine line up will be the same as the Cruze. Possibly up-rated 1.6 and 1.8 litre petrol units like the current Optra.

The engine that I would love to see in the Orlando is the 2.0 litre 150 hp unit from the Captiva, and this is one of the units slated for inclusion in the high end Orlando, but Thai punters could be some way from embracing the diesel in this type of vehicle.
Drive

Chevrolet has a new 6-speed automatic that it is likely to pair up with the new Cruze, but it has yet to be seen if that will make it to Thailand. This would be a really impressive feature in a car in this segment, and if the Cruze gets it, the Orlando will also.

Initially the Orlando will be front-wheel drive, with 4-wheel drive models to be introduced later on. In Thailand, the front-wheel drive variant would be sufficient, and it would allow Chevrolet to put some additional distance between the Captiva and Orlando.

2012 ferrari 458 spider

The Ferrari 458 Italia is the best car I have ever driven. You might assume the Italian supercar earns that distinction on sheer performance and sex appeal, but the truth is that the 458 is a much more complete car. Its excellence is in how it combines measured balance with raw capability unlike any other vehicle. The 458 Italia is sophisticated but visceral. Aggressive yet refined. Elegant and brutish. With the Spider, Ferrari aims to add one more contradiction to the 458's achievements: a convertible that's also a coupe.
Ferrari's task in building a Spider is not quite as intuitive as it sounds. The open-air 458 is certainly a predictable and modest evolution of the Italia, but the buyers of the two cars are very different. The average 458 Italia will see most of its action on the weekend, without a passenger, and on shorter trips. Spiders, on the other hand, are more likely to be daily drivers exposed to city streets, often with a passenger in the right seat. More notably, Ferrari asserts that Spider owners drive with a sporty -- not aggressive -- style.
Even with buyers using their cars in an entirely different manner, Ferrari won't compromise any of the intensity in its mid-engine coupe to deliver a droptop version. Despite the fact that the Spider is 30 percent less rigid than the coupe, the spring rates are unchanged. And while the magnetorheological dampers are specifically tuned for the Spider, you won't notice a difference in the ride quality between the two cars. The Spider is every bit as firm, controlled, and focused as the Italia. The steering is just as sharp, the throttle pedal just as responsive, and the suspension just as poised. Twist the manettino to Race mode, however -- perhaps an unlikely move for the less aggressive convertible buyers -- and the Spider can't hide the fact that it's missing a major structural component. With the dampers firmed up, the bumps aren't just felt through the seat. They're seen in a small wiggle of the windshield and heard in the muted rattle of the aluminum chassis. Nothing unusual, but this is the one clear difference between coupe and convertible.
The 458 Spider's retractable roof is a two-piece hardtop inspired by the 575 Superamerica. Like that car, the roof rotates -- rather than folds -- into its stored position. Unlike that car, the 458 Spider uses an aluminum skin instead of glass. Ferrari claims that the 458's hardtop assembly is actually some 55 pounds lighter than the 430 Spider's fabric roof. It adds roughly 110 pounds to the Italia's 3400-pound curb weight.

2013 bmw 3 series

BMW is poised to add a big but slinky "4-door coupe" to answer the Mercedes-Benz CLS-Class and Audi's upcoming A7. It may not be badged 8-Series, but it should be the new flagship car for the world's top-selling premium-vehicle brand.

What We Know About the 2013 BMW 8-Series

It seems BMW will offer a "4-door coupe" after all, patterned on the Gran Coupé Concept revealed during the April 2010 Beijing Auto Show. The swanky long-wheelbase sedan should be the new flagship of a BMW car fleet that keeps adding new members like a college fraternity. It's also a belated reply to the strong-selling Mercedes-Benz CLS-Class, which is being redesigned for 2012, and targets Audi's similar A7, which is expected in the U.S. that same model year.

Significantly, the Munich-based powerhouse all but confirmed a production Gran Coupé at the Beijing show, issuing a press release citing "the aspiration of the BMW brand to build 4-door high-performance models with the sportiest proportions and the most elegant design." Though the name is apparently still to be decided, some think BMW will revive the 8-Series moniker from the burly 2-door coupes that replaced its 6-Series models in the 1990s. Others believe the production Gran Coupé will be a new body style in the redesigned third-generation 6-Series that's due for 2012 in 2-door coupe and convertible form.

If all this sounds familiar, it should. Remember the Concept CS from the 2007 Shanghai Auto Show? That exercise set tongues to wagging, with many predicting a little-changed production version to be named Gran Turismo. But nothing came of it, and now we know why. As BMW design chief Adrian van Hooydonk told Britain's Autocar magazine in Beijing, "We all liked the idea of a more dynamic flagship 4-door then, but we put the [CS] 'on ice' to work on Project i, which has been a bigger priority." The designer refers to what BMW now calls its "Megacity" program, which is expected to spawn several pure-electric small vehicles to be marketed as a separate brand. It's part of a larger "Sustainable Mobility" effort that also involves developing hybrid powertrains and battery-powered versions of existing products like the Mini E at BMW's British brand. Apparently, the company feels its eco-vehicle efforts are far enough along that it can resume work on the kind of sleek, fast, "aspirational" products that have made BMW the world's top-selling premium-vehicle brand.
