The 2012 Boss 302S Mustang : Latest Reviews

Alton, Va. — The fifth annual Pirelli Ultimate Track Car Challenge was held July 22 at the famed Virginia International Raceway and Ford Racing was there waving the Ford banner.

Ford Racing entered a 2012 Boss 302S, one of two turnkey race cars offered by Ford Racing and rooted in the very successful Boss 302 street car.

To get the most from the Boss 302S, former Grand-Am hot shoe Dean Martin handled driving duties with Ford Racing's own Andy Vrenko. With record ambient temperatures hotter than 105 degrees the cooling systems was taxed and the vehicle reliability was truly tested.

In the first morning session, Martin clicked off a lightning-fast lap of 2:02.2, which was the fastest lap for a factory-built car and the fastest time turned by a Ford vehicle. Despite the extreme July heat, the Boss 302S never missed a lap in all three sessions, proving durability testing performed earlier in the year paid off. The Ford Racing Boss 302S also won the Whoa Wonder award for the best braking system on a factory-built car.

Also in attendance was the Boss 302S of George Winkler. He drove his Boss 302S to an excellent lap of 2:03.5, which earned him the distinction of second fastest Ford in attendance. Rounding out the top three fastest Ford drivers was Chris DeSalvo in his 2011 Boss 302S spec Mustang GT with a time of 2:03.6. Both Winkler and DeSalvo are regulars in the World Challenge GTS class and proved their Mustangs were up to the task by then racing in National Auto Sport Association classes all weekend.

Ford Racing's Boss 302S is a turnkey race car, built in the Ford Auto Alliance International assembly plant in Flat Rock, Mich., which is designed for sprint races, including the World Challenge Grand Touring Series, NASA American Iron Racing and Super Touring 2 and also makes an excellent track-day car.

Fiesta Spec B racer unveiled

Making its track debut at VIR was the Ford Racing Spec B Fiesta, which extends Ford Racing's commitment to grassroots racers and support of the Spec B class. Spec B allows very few modifications, those allowed inclued a full roll cage, typical safety equipment (racing seats, fire system, racing belts) and the spec Ford Racing coil-over suspension kit. Despite these minimal modifications, the Fiesta showed everyone it was up to the task.

Vrenko took the Spec B racer out on its first official lap and immediately felt comfortable behind the wheel.

"The Spec B Fiesta had excellent grip and good entry into the corners, along with accurate and linear steering," Vrenko said. "The Fiesta driving position was very comfortable and the brakes were confident, which allowed me to out-brake a number of high-dollar exotics attending the event."

Overall it was a great shakedown run of the Fiesta Spec B, which should only get faster with time and additional tuning. The Spec B Fiesta was also a hit off the track with many people inspecting it all weekend. Ford Racing Engineering Supervisor Mark Wilson also noted he received numerous thumbs up as he drove through the paddock.

On July 28, 2011 a one-of-a-kind Mustang, the Blue Angels Mustang, was auctioned at the 2011 Experimental Aircraft association AirVenture in Oshkosh, Wis. In all, the car sold for $400,000 and came with a Blue Angels flight helmet signed by the current flight team.

The car, which is collaboration between Ford and EAA AirVenture, was inspired by the Blue Angels naval aviation demonstration team. It features a blue chrome finish with a yellow gloss accent and "Blue Angels" scripted along with its iconic crest. On the inside you’ll find The Blue Angels' crest stitched into its leather Recaro seats. As for the car’s powerplant, it is powered by a super-charged 5.0L V8 engine producing more than 500 horsepower. The car also comes equipped with a Ford Racing handling pack, performance exhaust, and racetrack brake components.

"Ford is a long-time supporter of EAA and our mission to showcase the finest innovation and technology in flight," said Tom Poberezny, EAA and AirVenture chairman. "The high interest among aviators in the U.S. Navy and the 'Blue Angels' Mustang team will make this a very sought-after item and ensure EAA's ability to do some amazing things for our future aviation enthusiasts." Ford says the "Blue Angels" Mustang will be on display inside the Ford Hangar during EAA AirVenture.

Looking back, Ford has partnered with EAA for the past three years, creating special one-of-a-kind Mustangs each season. In 2008, they created the Mustang AV8R, with cues from the F-22 "Raptor”. It featured a glass-roof canopy and delivered a record auction contribution of $500,000. In 2009, the AV-X10 "Dearborn Doll" auctioned was crafted in honor of World War II aircraft. In 2010, Carroll Shelby, a former U.S. Air Force flight instructor, and Jack Roush, a long-time P-51 pilot, collaborated for the first time to create the SR-71 "Blackbird" inspired by the legendary reconnaissance jet. In all, Ford’s support for the EAA Young Eagles program has exceeded $1.3 million in recent years.

"The Ford Design and Engineering team members have really embraced the opportunity to build these one-off projects," said Kevin Keling, Ford corporate events manager. "We develop the theme early and then marvel at the creativity and ingenuity of the team. This blue chrome paint is fantastic and unlike any thing you'll see in production anywhere. The small details such as puddle lamps projecting jets are amazing!"

The Young Eagles Auction is part of the EAA Gathering of Eagles, and took place on Thursday, July 28, at the EAA AirVenture Museum. According to a press release, the Gathering of Eagles annually draws more than 1,000 aviation enthusiasts in support of Young Eagles and other EAA programs that inspire young people to become the engineers, aviators, astronauts, scientists, and innovators - the aviation pioneers of tomorrow.

Original owner still drives her 1966 Mustang

The car in front of the stang is her Mom's Rambler Ambassador. She still drives it occasionally too. Right now it's got a leaky valve guide issue

She bought the stang when her MG wasn't making her happy with the lack of luggage space on her frequent cross country trips, she'd bought an MG in 1956 when she was fed up with a Hillman not having enough power to take a decent grade hill with speed.

Shelby Europa were just getting started by Claude Dubois, who raced a Ford of Antwerp Shelby Gt 350 in Spa in 1967. They came directly from Ford as semi-finished and completed by Dubois. Now it was not very many, 1971 and 72 made a total of just 14 pieces, including two convertibles.

There are eight survivors, three of were in Sweden, then Norway, then to Finland.

Well, so was there a special European-Shelby prototype, GT250, a 1971 Mercury Comet that Claude supplied with a GT40 289 block and heads, that gave the car more than 350 horsepower. It was a couple of years as Claude's own daily driver before being resold.

Claude was in Dearborn when Ford announced the cessation of the Shelby Fords, and so bought the last 34 or 36. He sold them in Belgium, Paris, Istanbul, Geneva and Germany

In 1965, Mexican auto parts distributor Eduardo Velazquez bought a Hi-Po 1965 Mustang hardtop and delivered it to Hi-Performance Motors in Los Angeles for conversion to competitive status. Equipped with a race-ready 289ci engine and the complete Shelby suspension, the Mustang became a winner in Mexico . By the end of 1966, Velazquez's team had won ten of the seventeen events they had raced.

Ford Motor Company, S.A, the Mexican branch of the corporation, had begun producing Mustang hardtops During 1966, Velazquez became a Shelby parts dealer, and the victories provided great promotion for Shelby aftermarket parts for those Mustangs. In 1967, Velazquez formed a friendship and partnership with Carroll Shelby. Their company Shelby de Mexico, would create modified Mustangs to be marketed through Ford of Mexico dealerships.

The Shelby de Mexico models of 1967 and 1968 were powered by 289ci engines and looked nearly identical to their 1967 and 1968 stateside namesakes. Production totaled 169 units in 1967 and 203 units in 1968.

The 306 Shelbys produced in 1969 were based on 302hp powered Mustang hardtops, but had fiberglass roofline extensions that created a Fastback look. Their front sheetmetal was near-stock Mustang, but the slightly bulged hoods were fiberglass, their deck lids had spoilers, and the taillights were the 1965 Thunderbird units used by US production 1968 and 1969 Shelbys. Several of the 1969 Shelby de Mexico GT-350s have been brought into the United States during recent years, and two have been featured in Mustang Monthly and other enthusiast magazines.

During those years, Shelby de Mexico campaigned Mustang race cars throughout Mexico , including two Shelby-built 1966 and 1967 Group 2 hardtops. Much advice was received from Al Dowd, Phil Remington, and Lew Spencer at Shelby American, and Carrol! Shelby made a point of attending several races in Mexico . The company created two race cars in 1969 and only one in 1970. Only one of those race-specific models is known to survive.

Shelby de Mexico, during the 1971 model year, built approximately 200 Shelby Mustang GT-351s (Windsor engines) and 300 Shelby Mavericks powered by 302hp engines.
